Christmas Trees: These arrived in England in the 1830's and became enormously popular when Price Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria, took a tree to Windsor Castle in 1841. It is thought that the first tree to be decorated with lights was in 1882 when the vice-president of the Thomas Edison Electric Company, E. Johnson, strung together small light bulbs on his tree. The Christmas card has arrived at its destination some 33 years after it was posted reports the Scotsman newspaper. Staff at Kirkton Community Centre in Dundee received the card, which had a 3p stamp and was postmarked Kilmarnock, 20 December, 1973. The Christmas card was sent to Robert Stevenson, a former employee, who left in the 1970's to go on a round-the-world trip. Christmas cards: The first card was designed by John Callcott Horsley in 1840. He was an artist from London. The first 1000 Christmas cards went on sale in 1843 for the equivalent of 5p each. Question: What did the Christmas card say to the stamp? Answer: Stick with me and we'll go places! THE Traditional Christmas Card Stephen and Glynis Woolner first sent each other Christmas cards way back in 1978 and they have continued to send the same cards to each other for the last 29 years. Every year they pack the cards away with their decorations and then resurrect them the following year. It all started as a joke when Stephen decided to give it to Glynis his again and she had decided to do the same and now they do it every year. Each year they write a new message on the card. Friends come round and say 'Not those old cards again', but we love it. If he bought me a brand new card now I wouldn't accept it.' • This is the very first commercially produced Christmas card. It was drawn in 1843 by John Calcott Horsley of Torquay, England, at the request of Sir Henry Cole. • The first Christmas greeting by SMS was a simple 'Merry Christmas'.
